Why cupcakes?

That's a very good question.

There's something special about a cupcake. You don't have to share it. You don't need any utensils to enjoy it. It's a self-contained bit of joy. Granted, it can be very tough to daintily eat a cupcake, but that's part of the point. Sometimes, you just have to go face first into things.

Why THESE cupcakes?

That's an even better question.

While cupcakes in and of themselves are great, sometimes, you need a little something extra. Something to take the celebration to the next level. Combining the joy of dessert with some of your favorite libations will do just that. A desserts is great. An alcoholic dessert is better. And, if you have a major hankering for a special taste, let us know, and we might be able to create a custom made cupcake for you. Several of the cupcakes on the menu started out as an idea someone thought would taste good. So you never know, your favorite taste or drink idea might make it onto the menu someday.

About the owner

100 Proof Cupcakes is the brainchild of James Lewis, a guy who's been baking since he was six. No, I'm not joking, I actually started baking when I was six. It was corn bread from a mix, but still counts. And I have the burn marks on my fingers to prove it. Anyway, I, I mean he graduated from basic baking from a box to complex baking from a box, and then took the leap to baking from scratch, which was admittedly a bit more time consuming, but felt much more rewarding.

Somewhere along the way, mixing alcohol with baked goods became an idea, most likely due to the multiple bottles of Frangelico he received as Yankee Swap gifts. After that, and some trial and error, James was a bit more willing to share his creations with family and friends. Most often, he would be struck by a fit of culinary creativity, but since he didn't want to leave that much dessert at home, he usually brought them into work. It was the colleagues who finally nudged him to share his talents with the public. Partially because he had damaged too many diets in the office, but mainly because they thought he was that good.

As for the cupcakes question, that, like many things, can be attributed to James' first wife, Maria. You see, Maria would see all the cakes leaving the house, but never got to sample the goods, because delivering most of a cake to work was bad form, and James generally forgot to save Maria a slice (usually due to the cake disappearing too quickly). So as a compromise, James started making cupcakes, since it was much easier to hide a missing cupcake from a large container than to hide a cake slice.
